Friday Fresh!

Today we ask: If talent and gender were not a factor, which professional sport would you compete in?

My answer: I would be an Olympic driver.

When I was about 14, I competed on a diving team. While those first few months went well enough because I had some natural athletic ability, I went on to struggle on dives with higher degrees of difficulty. Standing on the board during meets, I found I could not block out the audience (and especially how badly they might think I looked in a wet Speed-o!) and was unable to give those dives the concentration they needed. And it was no fun to get low scores! So when that season ended, I “retired.”

However, years later, while working in a bustling office, I found I could block out everything and everyone to work on my stories. Must be because writing is my true passion, while diving was just a Friday Fresh fantasy? What do you think?

And okay, who’s next?

Diving is fun! You should start again. I never did anything professional with diving, but I was on a varsity swim team for a long time. And then I moved to the middle of nowhere... ah, well. All good things come to an end.

I would be a professional ice skater.

Wow, there are so many good sports to choose from! I loved playing volleyball in high school--to be pro would be fun. Which would never happen with my shortness. haha!

Tina:

LOL! You got me with "olympic driver"...I was trying to picture people driving race cars in the Olympics. :)

Jaden, great idea to start diving again, but considering I was self-conscious in a Speed-O in my youth, now would not be good, okay? ;)

Erin, a professional ice skater sounds wonderful, too. I'd love to try a sou cou. (sp?)

Kelly, you're not too short for volleyball! Remember 5'2 Nic? :)

Susan, ooops, got me on that typo! LOL.

I think I'd echo Ice Skater. I was in love with the likes of Kristi Yamaguchi and Ekaterina Gordeeva when I was a kid.

Maybe gymnastics, too...

Oh, yeah, Lisa, great choices! There's something about those uneven bars that really get my imagination going, too.

Fun topic! I'd pick the equestrian team or the ice skating team. :)

gymnastics or ice skating. If it was ice skating, I'd want it to be pairs. I wouldn't mind having a really hot-looking partner. And there's a part of gymnastics where it's almost showy, and you have a partner. I can't remember if it was part of the Olympics or not, but what I saw of it was very cool. It's still very acrobatic, but it's like pairs skating..only not on the ice.

Jessica and Celise, you both mentioned ice skating pairs, and yeah, that's another one that lits up my imagination, too. As a matter of fact, there's that pairs skating movie from the '90's, I think...is the male lead D. B. Sweeney? I always meant to watch it. Anyone know the name?

Thanks all, for your comments!

"The Cutting Edge". I LOVED that movie! Any movie where the main focus is ice skating, I'm SO there. And yes, I even saw "Blades of Glory." It was like a train wreck, really. I liked "Ice Castles", too.

Yes, Celise, that's it. Thanks!
