Making Good Foods Even Better

When I was kid, I knew people who put ketchup on their eggs. I thought that was gross and weird...until salsa came into my life, and now I totally get the tomato with egg taste.

On the flipside, while visiting a friend in Europe, I shocked her by eating a raw floweret of broccoli. I kept insisting raw veggies and dip was standard party fare in the U.S., but all she could do was laugh at me.

I guess it’s all about what you know and feels right to you, huh?

Now, check out this picture of pancakes and orange slices.

Rather standard breakfast fare, and as it happens, two of my favorite things. Except for the way I eat them: my pancakes runny in the middle, and my orange slices with the rind attached. In addition, I consider the skin the best part of the baked potato. And I’ve been known to eat dry Coffeemate from a spoon.

I’m betting I just earned myself an “ewww” or two? Believe me, I hear them from my family over these things all the time. But hey, why not eat foods the way you like them?

So how about you? Any creative and original ways that you make good foods even better?

LOL! Tina, my aunts have eaten the orange skins, and I eat my scrambled eggs with ketchup. I do need my pancakes cooked good, though!

I'll have to think on anything else that might be odd that I eat. :) :)

Tina,
I'd have to say that the dry Coffeemate did get an EEWWW out of me.
I like cheese and pickles. And my favorite sandwich is rye bread, with lettuce, peanut butter & mayo.

I totally put ketchup on my scrambled eggs. I didn't know it was perceived as weird by some, lol. I also have a peanut butter/oreo cookies combination that gets some eyebrows raised.

But trust me, it's delicious!

Kelly, good to hear your aunts like a full-bodied orange slice, too. I am not alone!

Janie, while I get your eeewww on the Coffeemate, the description of that sandwich doesn't do much for me...

And Ella, the PB/Oreo thing has definite possibilities! Thanks for suggesting that.

It's a total NYC thing to put ketchup on scrambled eggs--still do it, though I rarely eat eggs.

I think my only odd thing is I would always order a really nice martini with green olives, a little dirty--with a sidecar of Coke. I have no idea why and I guess martinis aren't food--but olives are, so I'm gonna say it counts. ;-)

Well, Erica, I grew up in Westchester County, so that would explain the NYC egg influence!

And love the sidecar of Coke! Guess those olives leave you thirsty?!?

I thought of another one! A long-time favorite snack has been pretzels and milk. Especially when I'm having low blood sugar...

I can do the ketchup and eggs.... but runny pancakes......yuck!

One thing I used to love as a teen (and it's making my mouth water thinking about it now) mashed potatoes mixed with mayo and covered with cold baked beans...yum!

TinaFerraro said...

Okay, Sara, I go with "yuck" on the potatoes thing...but tell you what. If I get to NZ some day and you dish it up for me, I WILL try it!

I like my pancakes a little gooey in the middle, too. It grosses my family out.

Also, I've never done ketchup on eggs, but salsa, definitely. I'll put anything on them to try and disguise the taste.

My husband eats a sandwich his mother taught him: peanut butter, bacon, sweet pickles and mayo on toast (must be toast). This sounds nauseting to me, but I put it in my next book. Maggie's pregnant mother eats it.

Rosemary--you're a fellow gushy pancake eater! See, we really are Delacorte twins!

And yeah, that sandwich sounds uh, interesting. Wonder if you'll get mail from readers saying they tried it?

I love me some pancakes. My husband learned to make them about a month or so ago. For the first time ever. LOL. He makes them better than I do. And now he makes them in a wok.

Weird food? Cottage cheese and pork'n'beans.

I'm slacking on my blogging this week ladies. Sorry.
People always think I'm weird because I drink milk when I eat pizza, but it tastes good to me. I also love a good tuna fish sandwich with Doritos on it. Yum!
xo,
Steph

Pizza and milk? Okay, different...but I can see it. In fact, I think I served it that way when my kids were little!

And I've done tuna and potato chips, so I'll have to try Doritos!

Thanks, Steph!
