Win a Copy of How to Be Bad!

Okay, so I was driving down the street the other day, passing a local independent bookstore, when I caught sight of some very familiar names on sidewalk signs:

E. LOCKHART

LAUREN MYRACLE

SARAH MLYNOWSKI

followed by the words, TODAY AT 3:30.

I braked. “Hey, I know those young adult authors. From writing loops. From Ya Fresh. From MySpace.” So after a quick check-in at home, in I went. To find them in a lively roundtable chat with a group of readers, discussing their new and collaborative release, HOW TO BE BAD, as well as asking and answering questions.

(Shown: Lauren, Emily & Sarah.)

I’ll admit I missed a lot of the conversation due to my seat outside the circle, but my favorite line was Emily explaining that after returning from a signing tour, she had been known to respond to her friends’ and family’s questions with fifteen minute answers. Ah, the occupational hazards of being a public speaker!

The very funny Lisa Yee sat at the end of the table with the YA department manager, Catherine Linka, who was kind enough to introduce me (and my book titles) to the crowd as well.

So...in honor of a spontaneous good time, I bought a copy of HOW TO BE BAD and got the authors to sign it. Leave a comment here on our blog about surprises or spontaneity or praise for any of the above listed authors and you will be entered to win the book. The contest closes at 6:00 pm EST on Sunday, June 1. Check back for the winner's name.

And hey, Emily, Lauren and Sarah...nice meeting you and hope you enjoy the rest of your tour!

I just finished reading E. Lockhart's The Disreputable History of Frankie Landau Banks and just LOVED it - almost as much as I loved her Dramarama! How cool that you got to see her (and the other authors) as a Surprise!

SARAH MLYNOWSKI's books were some of the most popular in our book review center! I always had teachers and librarians wanting to know more about her. I would love to be surprised with those three. I just realized last week they were touring together, and have been telling everyone who comes in!

I am pretty sure E. Lockhart's The Boyfriend List helped me get over certain issues regarding an ex from high school. He was kind of like Jackson. E.'s characters remind me of people I know in real life so much more than other books and it is a comfort to me.

Oh, oh, and Frankie Landau-Banks should be required reading by anybody who has a critical eye about gender relationships. That last sentence does not do justice to how not-boring the book is, I swear.

OH NO! I haven't read any book by any of these authors..I know, how could that be? But I'm definitely aiming to this summer..it will be on my list of things to read for sure.

And I must say that Lauren has a fabolous name...hahahah..just because we share the same one! :)

I really can't wait to read this book though. It looks fantastic and it's so cool hearing how they decided to work together..via the internet. What a powerful place!!!! :)

My boyfriend knows I read a lot but he doesn't really pay attention to anything I read or what type of books I like. He also isn't one for buying books - he feels money could be spent in better places - like on new tires. However, one day he randomly came home with a surprise for me - Fly on the Wall by e. lockhart.

He didn't know the author or anything but said, something about the cover caught his eye and he thought I would love it - and I did. It was the first book I'd read by e. lockhart and it was the best surprise ever because now I'm hooked.

Hi Tina,
How fun that you saw that sign and had such a great time. Things like this should happen more often. I think it's also a matter of keeping our eyes and hearts open to everything around us.

I've only read one of Sarah's adult books so far, Fishbowl! It was a great book, I didn't even realize she wrote YA until a few months ago. All these authors and books are my TBR list though. Man I wish i was driving down the street and happened upon an event such as this! Man I'm so jealous! How fun!

I didn't realize there was a new E. Lockhart out! Got to go get it.

I particularly loved her Fly On the Wall, which was weird and daring and very very funny, and also Dramarama, both for the true-to-life characters, and also how she used the current shows that teens are really into rather than older stuff. ;-)

As for surprises...I'm constantly surprised when I find out that this is the end of May. Already. In 2008. Where did the time go??? And how can I be so behind??? ;-)

I love Sarah's Magic in Manhatten series because when magic is involved it is magical. Plus I was gasping at the end of the second book. I can't wait to see if I gasp from reading How To Be Bad!

p.s. I first heard about the series by reading a review for Bra's and Broomsticks on mybkclub.com

Wow, you got to meet four authors at once! Lucky. :)

Hmm...something about surprises...ok, I really don't like when people throw surprise parties for me. I mean, I love that they thought of me like that, but when it comes to parities I like the anticipation. And to be prepared!

Oh My Goodness, how lucky of you! I bet that was so much fun. I wish I could meet them.

I've read Sarah Mlynowski's Bras and Broomsticks series, it was awesome. I just recently finished Spells and Sleeping Bags, I think it was the best of the three.

I'd love to have a copy of How To Be Bad! Every time I see it I have strong urge to buy it. But I definitely shouldn't. I have two little mouths to feed, lol. I wish those three would be stopping in Tacoma, I'd love to see them!

Oh my goodness, Tina! How exciting-- I love spontaneity (did I spell that correctly?)Funny story, I actually got into the whole myspace thing from reading an article last fall about the upcoming novel HOW TO BE BAD. The article was written by the three authors who shared their experience in writing together and how they found eachother on myspace. And, in a round about way, that's how I "found" you!

As for surprises (which I LOVE), my favorite was my engagement ring which I was completely NOT expecting and my husband did everything just right. =)

Count me in on the contest!

I was so suprised, while taking my AP Language (english) exam that one of the essay questions (I cannot disclose the question as we were literaly sworn to secrecy after taking the test) fit perfectly with the cafeteria protest in The Disreputable History. None of my friends had any literary sources that applied to the question (you're supposed to bring in outside information) but, thanks to E. Lockhart I had the perfect source!

To E. Lockhart,
I hope you get a chance to read this. I am currently a college undergrad writing my thesis about your book The Boyfriend List...it related to me in so many ways. I loved that book and the second The Boy Book--can't wait till the third. Well, I wanted to know if there is anyway to email you or at least get some information about your inspirations. I particularly have some questions that pertain to my paper/book or accumlation of random ideas. Please if you do read this (I will post this somewhere else...my email is jolieluv20@yahoo.com) Thanks, Liz
