The Evolution of School Lockers!

School lockers have made a total transformation since I went to school (okay, admittedly in the dark ages). Back then, they were nothing but a necessity--long, metal gray caves where you stored your stuff. And at the end of the year, where you found long-lost umbrellas, homework drafts and cupcakes.

Today, they're often as important as a student's clothing and walk...they reflect her style:

Or are billboards for notices and spirit:

One of the more clever decorations I've heard of was the techno-geek who rigged his locker to play music when he opened it.

How about you? Have you been or are you a locker decorator? What have you seen others do? Share with us--we'd love to hear!

I've been hearing that some schools don't allow lockers anymore. That seems crazy to me. Instead, the kids end up with back problems from carrying so many heavy books.

The only thing I've ever done was hang pics of my celeb crish-of-the-moment. And not much else.

At one point me and my two locker partners (yes, technically you are only allowed one locker partner, but my original locker partner had a soft spot for this lockerless refugee) covered the entire inside of our locker door in multi-colored, star shaped, sticki-notes saying random things like, "Have you hugged a tree today?", "Sara was here :)" and "You rock my socks, home-schizzle" Many strange looks were awarded whenever we opened our locker XD

Janie, I've hard that, too. And sometimes kids use their car trunks as lockers!

Cute, Celise...that's way more than I did.

Aliya, I love your descriptions! Thanks! And actually, a couple years, I had two locker-partners, as well. Boy, it was crowded!

Sadly when I was in school not many decorated their lockers. haha. It was shove the books in and pull 'em out. I love what the kids are doing now!

I've never been to a school that had lockers, unless the ridiculously small ones for P.E. count. (That whole "students could be hiding drugs/weapons!" thing.) But that doesn't necessarily mean back problems, as another commenter said. We had two sets of textbooks -- one for the classroom, the other for home, so we didn't have to lug them around most of the time. (Hmm, now I'm curious whether buying two sets of textbooks is cheaper than getting lockers for school. :P)
