The Ultimate Fluff Piece

Kelly and I love to feature author interviews, book reviews and contest giveaways here at YA Fresh, but also have fun promoting pop culture, yummy foods and current trends--the latter of which I sometimes refer to as our “fluff pieces.”

So when our good friend, Vanessa Barneveld, sent me the following link, not only did my eyebrows shoot toward the ceiling, did my mouth drop open in astonishment, but what ran through my mind was that this was the ultimate fluff piece.

Okay, here’s the deal. A woman in South Carolina will take your dog or cat’s hair and weave it into “warm, cozy creations” like mittens, sweaters, hats, purses. For real.

Check this out:

Warm, Cozy Creations

Reactions have included “What a great way to use all the hair my cat sheds!” to “This is five kinds of creepy!” I suppose it depends on your perspective. I mean, if you have a moose head mounted on the wall of your study, why not one-up that trophy with a purse made of your cat’s hair? However, if you’re like me and put a lint brush to good use when your pet is shedding, it does rather seem like taking recycling to a well, hair-raising place.

So please, weigh in! Could you see yourself ordering up a “warm, cozy creation” of your pet’s fur?

That's really creepy. Even the idea makes my skin crawl!

Ew. I'll admit the bags look kind of cute, but... ew.

I'm all for being green and recycling whatever we can but that's kinda gross...

Hi,
I don't think I'd want to carry around something like that. Eww.

Part of me says it's no different than shearing sheep and making wool socks. But a bigger part of me just says "ew". :P

It's one way to keep your pet around forever - not that we won't be finding cat hairs when we are in our 90's...

I have no idea. PETA will probably have a field day with this lady, though!

It is a bit creepy, but on the one hand, as we have been brushing our Shelties, we will get so much hair from them, that we think that we could stuff a couple of pillows!

I'm in agreement with all the votes for creepy.

While I'm not a fan of fur recycling, I reckon I could sell my cats' cast-offs to this lady and make a fortune.

I think they're cutee...as long as you don't think about the cat hair. If I didn't know that, then I'd totally buy it.

LOL, well, I don't know. Where does wool come from, everyone? It's shaved off sheep. Where does leather come from? ;) I have an alpaca poncho. I have no idea if the hair was shaved off or shedded off. But I will say this. We had an Alaskan Malamute for 13 years. He had his major sheddings in the fall and spring. My husband brushed enough hair from that dog to fill big black garbage dogs. We often joked that if you washed the hair and found a way to weave it, it would be just as nice, if not nicer, than the alpaca ponchos and sweaters that were popular years ago.

I think the idea is kinda cute. But then I'm warped.

You're not warped, Cindy--LOL. You make really good points. I think the "rub" here is that we're talking about our pets, who are like members of our family, and that makes it hard to consider their fur anything but a part of them.

I'm with the "It's no different than wool" people. In fact, it's less cruel to the animal than wool is, but that's a whole other story.

I wouldn't have a bag like that, but then again, I also wouldn't want a bag made out of human shed hair either. *shrug*

All my cat's shed hairs go into the compost, that's recycling enough for me...
