What Hooks You to Buy a New Author?

Okay, I'm what you call a loyal reader to my favorite authors. If they've hooked me with some awesome characters or an adventurous series, you got me for life! haha. If the author starts writing in a new genre--I'm picking him/her up.  But I'm one of those picky people when it comes to finding authors I've never read before. I'm not a one genre reader girl. I do go through phases and read one or two particular genres for a while, but basically I've read it all.

I guess what I'd like to know from readers: what makes you try a new author?  Let's not count word of mouth because I think book buzz intrigues many of us.  Let's say, you are browsing on-line and you're looking for a new author.  Do you consider...

Let's take a poll!

I listed these options because I really go through an entire research method before I buy a new author. LOL. But like I said, if you hook me, I'm faithful! If you consider something else, let us know in the comments. So what do you think?

I chose blurb, although, to be honest, it's usually the cover that makes me pause long enough to look at the blurb.

Kelly, this is so much fun! I thought long and hard about it, and I have to say FIRST it's the blurb. There are topics that attract me, and those I'll generally pass on. THEN it's the first chapter, which I usually download to my Kindle. So I voted for blurb. Really looking forward to everyone's answers.

I said all of the above, and MORE! Cover, then blurb, then first page has to grab me- but that's just on amazon (before a kindle purchase) or at the bookstore. When looking for a new author I also get ideas from my goodreads friends, twitter, fb, and online interviews on blogs. So, I guess social media IS important!

Jaycee, cover catches my interest first too!

Tina, it is fun! haha.

Monica, so true!! Book buzz is so important because if we keep hearing about a book we have to see what it's all about!

Not too many votes yet, but ALL OF THE ABOVE is ahead. :) :)

While I voted for "first pages", I agree with Monica - I listen to Goodreads reviews and friend recommendations for new books/authors.

I am not always loyal to authors. For example, I loved the Harry Potter series, and if sources are correct, J.K Rowling will be publishing some kind of adult mystery novel. I won't be buying that! But then, I read one book by Joe Meno in high school, and now I want to read all of his books.

The cover is the first thing that will turn me on to an author. Which is weird because the author doesn't really have much of a say when it comes to the cover if I understand correctly. Next comes the title and the synopsis on the back. It's as simple as that! I don't crack open the book to sample the writing, I just buy it and take it home and read it.

If I love the book, I am more likely to want to read something else by the author. For example, I just read Before I Fall by Lauren Oliver. I loved it, and now I want to read more of her work.
If I don't like the book, then I'm not likely to give the author another try unless someone tells me I've gotta read a certain book.
